This exhibit features the work of Devin Allen, Webster Phillips, Naaman Brown and Schaun Champion – four Baltimore-based photographers alongside the literary work of writers from Zora’s Den. Fourteen images depicting scenes from African villages to inner city streets, from pastoral vistas to moments of passionate protest are paired with the powerful poetry and prose of Black women writers.
This show invites you to explore the role of images in storytelling.
New narratives have been created with the use of photographs as visual prompts. They display the scope of how images are viewed individually and inspire a spectrum of perspectives. They serve as the visual representation of the words offered by writers of Zora’s Den who interpret the pictures through their stories and poems.
As another element, an interactive component of sound allows visitors to access a listening station where audio narration of each literary piece is added. The show engages images, words and sound to help explore the possibilities of imagination and lead to the subjective positing of What’s the Story? Here, the witnesses participate and decide.
